What is Global Developmental Delay?
  • GDD is a diagnosis given when a young child (usually under age 5) shows significant delays in two or more areas of development compared to what’s typical for their age.
  • It’s a descriptive term, not a permanent label — often used before a more specific diagnosis can be made.
Overlap & Co-occurrence

To be considered global delay, a child must have delays in at least two of these areas:

  1. Motor skills
    • Gross motor: sitting, crawling, walking.
    • Fine motor: grasping, holding objects, using fingers precisely
  2. Speech and language
    • Understanding (receptive) and using (expressive) language.
  3. Cognition
    • Thinking, problem-solving, understanding concepts.
  4. Social and emotional skills
    • Interacting with others, responding to social cues.
  5. Daily living skills
    • Feeding, dressing, toileting.
Possible Causes
  • Genetic conditions (e.g., Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome).
  • Pregnancy or birth complications (premature birth, oxygen deprivation).
  • Infections before or after birth.
  • Metabolic or neurological disorders.
  • Environmental factors (severe malnutrition, lack of stimulation).
  • In some cases, cause remains unknown.
Diagnosis
  • Usually made by pediatricians, neurologists, or developmental specialists.
  • Based on developmental milestones, medical history, physical exams, and sometimes brain imaging or genetic testing.
  • Often diagnosed before age 5 — after that, terms like intellectual disability may be used if delays persist.
Treatment & Support
  • Early intervention is key — therapy works best when started young.
  • Physiotherapy: for motor skills.
  • Speech therapy: for language development.
  • Occupational therapy: for daily skills and sensory needs.
  • Special education: tailored learning strategies.
  • Family support and training are crucial.
Prognosis
  • Some children catch up over time, especially if delays are mild or caused by temporary factors.
  • Others may continue to have developmental differences into school age, sometimes leading to diagnoses like autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability.
